I’m going back to school. How much do I talk about it and how much do I keep it discretionary. I’ve broken down my financials from a broad perspective, understanding the total cost of education for another 4 year degree. $100k+ which includes tuition and cost of living.
I applied today. I also turned in my transcript from my first B.A. Admission deadline for Spring of 2027 is November 1, so I am definitely ahead of the game.
I plan on not working full-time for the first few semesters and focus entirely on school. Ideally, I would not work throughout any of the spring/fall semesters and work/intern during the summers, but the realistic outlook on that is not great.
Here’s where I find things get interesting…
I’m weirdly okay with this. I have been working in sales/retail management for over 2 years now, with more of that at different companies before then as well. I know this is the right decision for me because I’ve been able to use all the experiences I’ve had over my work life and have realized that sales/retail sucks. Can I do it? Yes. Is my job bad? No, not bad, but anyone could do my job and I’m ready to do something that is more specialized. Not to mention I’ve been trying to grow and climb the corporate ladder at my current company to no real avail. I’ve taken the rejection as another nail in the coffin that this choice is right.
Now, how am I going to react when my savings start running dry and I will be unable to afford certain things? I don’t know, I have never been in that boat.
Ever since I began working, I have been able to live below my means and save consistently. This will be the first time that I am going to have zero income while also having bills to pay. Does that scare me? Right now, weirdly enough, no. I think the experience and lessons of running my stores as if they were my own business has developed some muscles in me that make this decision much easier to make and see through.
There will be problems. There will be obstacles and roadblocks in your way. Remember, the problems arise when we are unable to respond and react appropriately. Keep a level head, understand the situation, and come up with a solution. There’s always a solution.
